Skye Cormier is a self-taught artist who explores communication and self-expression through primarily the abstract as well as the representational. Predominantly utilizing acrylics, spray paint, and photography, they try to capture traditionally tabooed and othered subjects. They embrace childlike impulses, harnessing both control and the loss of it, through chaotic colour, shape, bold colours, and movement mirroring that of their own internal battles with a sense of identity and trauma. She continues to expand and experiment with various tools and mediums building on both resources and growing creative experiences

Self-taught or art school?

I am a self-taught artist.

If you could own one work of art what would it be?

If I could only own one work of art it would have to be one of my child’s self-portraits.

How would you describe your style?

My style is contemporary abstract, dabbling in and marrying various methods and styles.

Is narrative important within your work?

Every piece I create has a narrative or at least contributes to the ongoing narrative of my life.

Who are your favourite artists and why?

Cy Twombly is one of my favourite artists. His art invokes so many visceral emotions within me and is reflective of graffiti, the representational and symbolic. Kahlo for the pain and loss themed throughout her work as well as her political engagement. Jenny Saville for her contemporary representation of the ‘female form’ with its more honesty and rawness, challenging the male gaze found in much of fine art’s history.

What or who inspires your art?

My art is therapeutic processing; movement and instinct are integral aspects of my work. I am inspired by humanity in all its complexities.

Are there any recurring themes within your work and can you tell us about them?

Mental illness, trauma, sexuality, and identity are primary themes that run throughout most of my work. I explore the struggle to understand my own mind, things that have happened both to myself and by my own hand, as well as these concepts at large from socio-political as well as philosophical perceptions.

Where’s your studio and what’s it like?

My bedroom doubles as my studio space. I’ve not lived for more than a year in one place since 2016 and learned to utilize what space and materials I have available at that time.

Do you have any studio rituals?

I have no set rituals, but I often am accompanied by a cuppa, a smoke, and take masturbation breaks.

What are you working on currently?

I’m always working on several projects at once. I struggle to focus for very long and find it more productive to work on multiple projects at once.

Where can we buy your art?

You can buy my art in person in Leeds, UK or Ontario, Canada or online via any social media/website.

What are your ambitions?

To live in such a way I am content with my life and leave a positive impact.
