Sani Resort is the first certified carbon-neutral resort in Greece since 2020 and was awarded World’s Leading Luxury Green Resort by World Travel Awards in 2022 for the fourth year in a row. Set in a majestic 1,000-acre ecological reserve with Blue-flagged sandy beaches, forest trails and wetlands to explore, the resort is encouraging guests to reconnect with nature within a sustainable mini self-contained world.
Sani’s programme, Sani Green, is focused on improving its sustainability performance, from energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources to water conservation and sustainable procurement. Each Sani Green initiative is supported by well-defined policies and measurable targets, in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals. Sani is greatly increasing the renewable local energy capacity while cutting down on carbon emissions (Zero Carbon Footprint). Looking into the future, they’re very excited about their triple zero goal, which is their goal to be net zero by 2030, as well as zero plastic and zero waste by 2024.
- Sani Resort’s sustainable Sani Green programme aims to preserve the natural surroundings and support local communities and is now even stronger with the launch of the Zero Carbon Footprint project this year. Half a century of respecting nature has crafted Sani Resort into the ultimate sustainable destination, and Sani’s commitment to change and improvement has been proven by ongoing achievements and milestones.
- Sani supports various biodiversity projects, the Sani Wetlands Project and tree-planting, as well as over 40 organisations (schools, hospitals, refugee shelters) and provides scholarships to encourage local farmers to farm more sustainably.
- In May 2022, Sani launched the Sani Bee Spot, the largest bee spot in Greece, in collaboration with the non-profit Bee Camp to protect the residential bees and pollinators, which are very important for the local ecosystem, and teamed up with non-profit iSea to catalogue, for the first time ever, the resident dolphins of the Halkidiki region.
- In 2022 Sani also launched the ECO CARBON and ECO SERVICES projects aiming at assessing the carbon footprint and carbon storage potential of the old-growth, coastal Aleppo pine forest of Sani and piloted its first zero-waste restaurant using AI technology.
- Over 60% of Sani’s produce comes from within 100mi of the resort, with in-resort botanical gardens supporting the farm-to-table approach of its restaurants. Sani’s food and wine range, Land of Grace, produced exclusively by local artisans, is available to taste or purchase with all profits being donated to local food banks for vulnerable communities.
- Other achievements of the dedicated Sani Green programme include reducing water use by 48% in the last five years, reducing single-use plastic by 80% since 2013, as well as recycling rates of over 90%.
- The resort is now powered by 100% renewable electricity. Additionally, electric car charging stations can now be found in various locations around the resort, all club cars are now electric, and the resort has introduced a new fleet of plug-in and hybrid cars for transfers.
- Winnow Programme: The kitchen team uses a touch screen tablet to identify the type of food being wasted while an electronic scale under the bin records the weight. The system then serves a message to the user telling them the financial value of whatever was put in the bin, creating awareness of the cost of wasting food. The system is connected to Winnow’s cloud server which records waste in real-time, delivering Chefs and the management team daily reports outlining what was wasted the previous day, helping them change the way they work today to reduce waste. The system will help the Operations and Sustainability team to measure, track and reduce the current food waste that is being generated.
- This year, Tomata restaurant at Sani Marina was launched as Zero Waste Kitchen.
