Self-taught or art school?
I am a self-taught artist
If you could own one work of art what would it be?
Not easy to choose one, It would be a Retna, I love the way he has his own unique visual language, a fusion of modern and classic artistic styles.
How would you describe your style?
Contemporary.
Can you tell us about your artistic process?
The process can vary depends on the artwork, If it’s a painting, I would draw few studies put down some ideas, what message can be used to inspire, clarify and encourage the viewer to stop wasting his life with stupid stuff or self-destruction and to motivate yourself to start living the life you want now and/or to be a better person.
With bronze sculpture I found it more interesting, the process at the beginning would be the same like drawing some study and ideas on paper, then working with wax and 3D to create my master, for example with “Memento Mori” I used MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imagining) It’s a medical imaging technique used in radiology to form pictures of the anatomy and the physiological processes of the body. I like to try and learn different techniques using old or new technology.
Is narrative important within your work?
Yes as every artwork I create has a message or a meaning especially using letters for my painting, it can be my personal thought or what peoples thought about what our society was/is or will be. Regarding my sculpture, the viewer is I think more free to create is own story and meaning behind it. The purpose of my art is more moral instruction and serves to remind the viewer that life is precious, so they better not waste it on frivolous and meaningless things.
Who are your favourite artists and why?
I mentioned Retna before but will add :
– Cleon Peterson another LA-based artist whose chaotic and violent paintings show clashing figures symbolising a struggle between power and submission in our today society.
– Fabio Viale Italian marble sculptor, a combination of refined contemporary to historic sculpture with his own and unique style.
– Daniel Arsham, an American contemporary artist who combines eroded sculpture with crystals and architecture.
– and a shoutout to my best friend Alexandre Tartarin, a French contemporary artist based in my hometown Dijon, who creates sculpture mixing modernity and tradition.
As they are all so unique and inspirational.
What or who inspires your art?
Everything around me, today’s culture – our past present and future, our own mistakes in life…
Where’s your studio and what’s it like?
My art studio is based in Manchester. Spacious, great light, my desk, an easel for painting, stock for brushes, painting and a blank canvas.
What are you working on currently?
I am working on new paintings and new bronze sculptures that will be part of my collection “Language of the unheard”
