Maxim Timofeev is a contemporary Russian artist who is a member of the Creative Union of artists of Russia and the International Federation of artists. He was born in 1988 in Saratov. The works reflect the awareness and understanding of the multidimensional nature of the Universe. The simultaneous existence of an infinite number of parallel versions of universes, life in superposition, and the perception of duality as a paradigm of human consciousness.

Self-taught or art school?

Art school – it gave me a lot, but after graduation, I did not create works for about 10 years.

If you could own one work of art what would it be?

If you can freely admire it, then why should you own it? In the sense of having, it is more logical than the most expensive, but if I have the opportunity to look at the Malevich square any day, then I would not mind.

How would you describe your style?

Contrasting, dynamic, expressive.

Can you tell us about your artistic process?

Usually, it comes by itself, like a snowball, some channels open and information comes, there is such a flow that you do not have time to write everything down. You can be focused on something, you can only start thinking in a certain direction.  Physically, the process itself is almost always spontaneous and, depending on the form of the incarnation, it may require me to sit comfortably in a chair with a blanket and a tablet, or go to the workshop, pick up paints for a long time, meditating to mix them, or fly into the garage, turn on loud music, sing at the top of my voice and work with paint like a whip, splashing energy to work.

Is narrative important within your work?

An image is born, then you realize the meaning, it happens on the contrary, but art for me is always a narrative, a new story expressed in various forms, spaces, forming a question or a specific statement, it is always a narrative, and we, that is, the viewer, can be at different time points in history and from this see different, possibly contradictory passages.

Who are your favourite artists and why?

From modern: Neri Oxman, Guillermo Lorca, Banksy, I am also inspired by the photos of Erik Madigan Heck

What or who inspires your art?

Energy, it can come from space, people, situations, in the overwhelming cases positive, but some works came out of negative states.

Where’s your studio and what’s it like?

It is where I am! The home studio is bright, in the light from the attic windows, wooden floor, many different wooden boxes with paints, everything is in harmony with each other and in its place. It can be a garage or something similar, depending on the need.

Do you have any studio rituals?

Breathing practices, in the morning, directly during work-music, it attracts and in dynamic meditation, in dance, in singing, at some point you put the brush and start dancing, then again you take the brush and it’s all a single process, something inseparable.

What are you working on currently?

I am currently finishing work on a personal project on the topic of discrimination, which includes a personal exhibition and a psychological board game.
