We are delighted to showcase the work of @theretro We are delighted to showcase the work of @theretrodreamer in our Creative Souls Virtual Exhibition. ⁠ ⁠ https://www.thefluxreview.com/current-virtual/⁠ ⁠ Steve Timms was born in 60's Manchester and grew up in Oldham. He is an artist, writer, and occasional performer. He has always been highly creative, working in different genres with different materials. Steve studied graphic design at Oldham Art College and started making Super 8 films, and experimental videos. ⁠ ⁠ In the 1980s, he became interested in theatre, acting in various amateur theatre shows around Manchester, including an acclaimed production of Joe Orton's rarely performed 'What the Butler Saw.' In the 1990's, he did a theatre studies degree at the University of Huddersfield.⁠ ⁠ After graduation, Steve began working as a theatre critic for the Big Issue, and City Life magazine, reviewing shows and interviewing actors (spending time with the late Pete Postlethwaite being a career highlight). He is the author of several plays including 'Filthy Lies, Clean Breasts' (Edinburgh Fringe, 1998), 'American Beer' (BBC Radio 4), 'Detox Mansion' (24:7 Festival), 'Temp/Casual' (Contact Theatre), and 'The Distance Between Stars' (Studio Salford). In 2015, he won a New Talent prize at the Northern Writers Awards.

Embracing all forms of printmaking equally his prints are produced using hand or laser cut plates, via hand stamped blocks, as risograph prints, or digitally as Giclée prints. As a painter he works predominantly with oils or acrylics. He was originally trained in Wood Metal Ceramics and Plastics at Brighton Polytechnic. There he used the opportunity to develop a series of sculptural mixed media floor pieces in wood and ceramics. After leaving Brighton he continued to develop his work both 2 and 3 dimensionally but now mostly works in 2D, with paint, print and encaustic mixed media.

With a background in building and construction, Frankel often sketched colourful absractions withn coloured markers while talking ojn the telephone. His wife encouraged this passion and in 2019 entered him into a competition sponsored by a New York City gallery where he was chosen to participate in a group show. Since then Frankel’s paintings have been exhibited nationally and internationally. New York Galleries include Saphira and Ventura Gallery, SITE Gallery, and 440 Gallery. He enjoys painting people, plants, and the places where they meet. Predominantly using gouache and watercolour mediums, he enjoys depicting the emotion of the subject accurately rather than its figurative form. This has led him to use a sketchy, almost unfinished style that pulls back the process of painting, reminding the viewer of its human quirks in a time when machine-made imagery is exceedingly popular.⁠ ⁠ He graduated from the University of the West of England this summer and is making his start in what will (hopefully) be a fruitful arty career!⁠ ⁠ @spiritdai

Her passion for painting started when she was eight years old and led her to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Painting and Drawing in 2019, followed by her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Painting in 2023, both from the Academy of Art University (AAU). Throughout her artistic journey, she has participated in group exhibitions, such as the Spring Show (juried by the AAU's Fine Art department), and featured in several art magazines, including Southwest Art Magazine's “21 Under 31: Young Artists to Watch in 2021."⁠ ⁠ Her recent urban landscape series, titled ‘Moments at That Time: San Francisco,’ is a journey through life in San Francisco, a rediscovery of the comfort and familiarity left behind in her home country. Each painting captures moments that may be easily overlooked in the city's daily life, revealing its beauty through her unique perspective. Executed mainly in oil on canvas, her paintings reflect the city’s beauty through composition, color, and texture as representational urban landscapes. Drawing inspiration from the city’s diverse atmosphere, architecture, light, iconic setting, and varied weather, she skillfully shares her viewpoint with viewers. ⁠

By the age of 15, she had decided to become an artist despite parental pressure to pursue her academic studies, in which she excelled. In fact, her wide-ranging and enquiring mind was harnessed to her passion for art and the next five years were formative not simply in honing formidable graphic and painting skills, but also in exploring world literature, history, philosophy and psychology – and of course, art. Her work has been compared to Francis Bacon, Paula Reago and de Kooning in style and quality and is very much unique in its subject matter and interpretation of life as a young woman in 21st century Britain. In 2011 with the Arts Council of Great Britain's support Hesketh embarked on a series of paintings commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Pendle Witch Trials in Lancashire. Hesketh produced six extraordinary depictions of the hysteria of the moment dancing between 17th and 21st century politics, her work is relevant, edgy and disturbing. Following up the critical success of "˜A Pendle Investigation' shown at The Newman St Gallery, London, Hesketh painted a series of work depicting the life and poetry of Sylvia Plath.

Our Creative Souls Virtual Exhibition featuring 20 Our Creative Souls Virtual Exhibition featuring 20 artists will go live on Saturday. ⁠ ⁠ One of our artists is the wonderful Yibei Liu who is a figurative sculptor with a deep interest in the human condition. Her curiosity about human behavior and emotions fuels her creative process. Observing that people often act on impulse and inertia, seldom pausing to reflect on the underlying meanings and reasons behind their actions and feelings, Liu has long been fascinated by these questions. As a child, she frequently asked herself, "Why do people do what they do?" and "Why do they feel what they feel?" Her current project marks the beginning of a deeper exploration of these inquiries. It serves as a personal documentary of her evolving understanding of the human condition, capturing her study of the intricate relationship between emotions, actions, and the psychological motivations that drive them.

Following Brooke’s successful inaugural visit to InterContinental Maldives in 2023, she is back by popular demand and will be on island from 28th December 2024 to 9th January 2025 capturing the beauty of Raa Atoll, situated the edge of a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, from a bird’s eye perspective. This two-week residency will include laid-back art classes for guests, individual commissions from the most beautiful locations on the resort and a carefully curated exhibition of Brooke’s Maldivian seascapes – giving guests the opportunity to take home a unique piece of the island. Brooke will also be painting a piece that is dedicated to The Manta Trust, the luxury resort’s long-standing partner, with the 100% of the proceeds going towards the crucial work carried out by the charity. InterContinental Maldives is delighted to once again welcome Brooke to the resort, which aims to capture the island’s infinite ocean views, treasured marine life and surrounding nature from the air and ground.⁠

We are looking forward to featuring #fluxfamily ar We are looking forward to featuring #fluxfamily artist @millsy197635 Natalie Mills, also known as 'Millsy', grew up in Birmingham but moved to London in 1995 to study a BA Hons in Fine Art at The Byam Shaw School of Art, graduating in 1998. She recently moved back to Birmingham and is now working as an abstract artist. Mills uses mixed media in her work, including acrylics, spray paint, and collage. Edition 11 of The FLUX Review is available for pre-orders tomorrow and will be published first week of October.

It is an exciting medium and way that allows him to experiment and combine different techniques and materials to create unique and dynamic compositions using canvas and a range of paints.⁠ ⁠ The journey of the Authentic Therapist began in an urban setting, where he found inspiration in the diverse and constantly changing environment. He sees the world as a continual clash of ideologies and cultures, finding beauty in this chaos. Through his artwork, he strives to depict this chaos with visually striking and intellectually stimulating pieces. He believes in the ability of art to provoke social change and aims to capture the viewer's attention with the intention of promoting mindfulness and encouraging them to slow down.

He holds a Master's degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Porto, and for several years, he balanced his artistic activity with illustration and teaching Visual Arts. In 2009, the artist left teaching to dedicate himself exclusively to painting. He has since exhibited widely and gained recognition through various publications, collections, and distinctions.⁠ ⁠ I

She is a painter, illustrator, designer and author of books and short animations. She has worked on advertising, editorial, animation, publishing and fine art projects globally. Her published books include Moje malé more, Don't Take My Dreams From Me, Čmáranica a Machuľa. She is a winner of many awards, such as Channel4's 4Talent Award 2007 in the United Kingdom, The Minister of Culture of the Slovak Republic Award 2019, American Illustration 42 in New York and she is a Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London.

I am so excited to be working on an interview with I am so excited to be working on an interview with the totally amazing @ipek.ergen.studio for the 11th Edition of The FLUX Review magazine. ⁠ ⁠ Dr. İpek Ergen, born in 1984 in Istanbul and working globally, holds a PhD in Art Theory and Criticism, a master's degree in Art and Design, and a bachelor's degree in Painting (MSGSU). She achieved a significant milestone in 2009 by winning the "Young Painter of the Year" award. Since then, she has showcased her artwork internationally, participating in solo exhibitions, curated shows, and art fairs across the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, the Netherlands, and Turkiye. Her work has been shown in renowned venues like the Natural History Museum in London, and featured in various publications. Besides that, she has worked as an art consultant in Germany for several years and her art theory articles have been published in several books and scientific journals.

Walker’s innovative and individual technique involves creating vibrant landscapes that swiftly intrigue the viewer. Appearing almost photorealistic from afar, closer inspection reveals a wild and intricate abstraction of vivid colours. ⁠ ⁠ Starting with comprehensive photostudies of each location, Walker then applies his own unique style to the work to enhance and maximise colours and details, thereby creating an immediacy and depth to the piece. Walker’s artwork comprises intricate mosaics of many thousands of coloured triangles, each one individually hand-drawn on an iPad, and taking at least 200 hours to complete.⁠ ⁠ With a portfolio of landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes and botanical studies, Walker travels widely across the UK and Europe seeking inspiring settings and vistas, ranging from Amsterdam and the Italian riviera to natural Mountain views and Arboreta.⁠ ⁠ Walker says he uses his iPad as a ‘digital canvas’ with each image then produced as limited edition giclée prints (using archival-quality Hahnemühle photo-rag papers, using non-fade, natural pigments). Influenced by art movements like Pop Art, and early erotic illustrators like Aubrey Beardsley and fetish artist John Willie, she developed a penchant for themes of opulence, sensuality, and contemporary feminism. After completing her studies, Mildenhall honed her skills as a commercial graphic artist in London, where her love for textiles, graphic design, and latex kindled the spark of creativity that led her to conceive a truly innovative and unprecedented artistic vision.

She was born in Cambridge and has spent her life shared between England and France. She originally studied fine art painting at the City and Guilds of London Art School and recently completed a BA (Hons) degree in painting, drawing, and printmaking, followed by a Masters in Painting at Arts University Plymouth. In 2022, she received the Brownston Gallery Fresh Talent Award, was longlisted for the Platform Graduate Award, and was shortlisted for the Freelands Painting Prize. Haskins is a painter and printmaker whose current practice is inspired by her feelings of freedom and connection experienced when immersed in the landscape of Svalbard in the high Arctic. Her recent work is a result of kayaking and trekking expeditions in Svalbard and an artist residency in Longyearbyen, at the Spitsbergen Artists Center. She explores the discovery of a place and responds to her emotions experienced in such a powerful and yet fragile landscape.

These themes, along with childhood memories, are always central to her work. She is fascinated by the juxtaposition of living vegetation and decaying architecture in her art.⁠ ⁠ Palmer draws inspiration from historical photography techniques such as tin type, ambrotype, etchings, and lithographic printing. During the lockdown, she extensively studied and experimented with these processes, eventually developing her own unique style of editing, printing, and hand gilding images. She incorporates these techniques with her photography in sepia, monochrome, and colour.⁠ ⁠ The reactions her images evoke, along with the curiosity about her creative process, serve as a driving force behind her work.

She aims to convey how craft-based activities can be utilised to emphasise tactility and materiality; that which separates the handmade from the digital.⁠ ⁠ Pemberton addresses the proliferation of digital imagery enabled by the availability and immediacy of the Internet and how these images might mediate reality. Influenced by Jean Baudrillard’s writing, recent work has questioned the impact of deteriorating images and information disseminated online, and how such reproductions may transform the meaning of the originals.⁠ ⁠ Inspired by science fiction and dystopias, related imagery, colour palettes and themes emerge throughout Pemberton’s practice. Typically, work materialises as documentative and durational objects of the colour red. This seeks to highlight the mundanity and monotony as well as, by contrast, the fascinating and formidable extraordinariness of this digital age.
