Bianca Turner’s paintings are deeply inspired by nature and its vivid colors, and by the reflections of light. The shiny quality in her work, created by mixing bright colored paint with glitter, represents a fantasy world where her imagination and the elements of the universe intertwine. Turner sees art as “the definition of infinity” and her work explores the continuous transmutation of the evolving essence of life and nature. Visions and words turn into colors and textures to create new narratives in this dimension of infinity.

How would you describe your style?

Lyrical neo-abstract

Can you tell us about your artistic process?

I do not have an artistic process that follows any particular rules. I like to break the rules and create my own. I always do only what I want on the canvas with no limitations imposed on me by the art world. The only limitations that I have been set by my eyes. If I do not like what I see I change it. If I find something that I create pleasant to my eyes and my mind I consider that painting as being done and I sign it. I never know when I will finish a painting. I know that a work is completed when I find harmony between all the elements that intertwine on it.

Is narrative important within your work?

Sometimes narrative is important but sometimes just one word or an expression is enough to inspire me to create something. I don’t always start with the title of my work but there were times when a title of an article, a political message, a blog, or an essay pushed my mind to explore different ways of creating and my imagination started to flow onto canvas, wood or paper.

Who are your favourite artists and why?

I am mostly attracted by the contemporary artists who have clever works with a message, the ones who make my mind twist and turn the piece of art in various ways and play with the viewer’s imagination. One of my favorite artists is Salvador Dali.

What or who inspires your art?

Nature and the universe mostly inspire my art. I do not try to imitate nature because I respect it too much; same with the universe. I just steal colors and ideas from it. I am also inspired by societal issues, gender equality, cultural diversity, and climate change.

Where’s your studio and what’s it like?

My studio is in my back yard, behind my house, for most of the time since the weather permits in Los Angeles. However, about six weeks a year I work from my inside studio which is a bright sunny room in my house, extremely neat and organized surrounded by plants, books, and antiques. Somehow I have this idea that I must work like a surgeon: the bloodless the surgery is, the job is done better; it is the same with me: I work with very little paint being spilled around me.

Do you have any studio rituals?

Although the light is fantastic in Los Angeles, I do not like to paint in the morning. I rather start painting at 1 or 2 PM in the afternoon and carry on until late at night using a special light that is used in the movie industry when it is dark outside.

What are you working on currently?

Currently, I am working on my collection “Back from 3022” which is going to be presented in my solo exhibition in Vienna, next year. I am using gouache, oil, acrylic, and recycled materials on paper or canvas surfaces.
